Cornish Cross, Celtic Cross update - 16th March, 2013
The Cornish Cross is ready for delivery and has been awaiting the final preparations to the plinth. Weather for assembling is a challenge and it appears that the main concern is the wind. There are going to be two cranes lifting into position and this will be carried out at night.
The cross will be loaded from Newquay Airport premises and driven via the A30 to Exeter and back towards Plymouth on the A38 where it will park and await nightfall. Once the Tamar Bridge has given the green light to cross, the operation will spring back into action.
The outer surface of the cross has copper dust incorporated into its structure and in time it will become a striking verdigris green.
The small dedicated Gateguards team are very proud to be associated with the Cornish Cross and the Saltash Waterfront Residence Association.
We wish to thank all of those involved, special thanks to Duncan Healey, Stig Mc Donald and Simon Thomas.
P47D Thunderbolt - 24th January, 2013
A new aircraft will soon be added to our collection - the P47D Thunderbolt. Two versions are available - one in Razorback and the other in Bubble Canopy and we are now taking enquiries. As all our followers and customers would agree, the P47 is a new and exciting project to undertake and would complement any display or memorial.
Any aircraft you desire! - 24th January, 2013
We now have the facilities and capabilities to manufacture any aircraft of any scale, propeller or jet. We have also added a 1/33 scale Boeing 777 300 ER Dreamliner to our list of aircraft available, which has a wingspan of 2 metres and comes complete with a stainless steel stand in an airline colour scheme of your choice.
BF109E Replica - 15th November, 2012
Gateguards (UK) Ltd has secured the moulds for a BF109E!
Celtic Cross Monument update - 27th September, 2012
Welcome from the airfield here today in Newquay as I write this update on the Celtic Cross project. All the components are now on site with the Spars from Independent Composites.
Simon Thomas whose masterpiece we have been building, has been helping our Gateguards team get the head ready to be made into a mould.
Lots of interest with the project with TV crews arriving to interview us which adds to an already busy timetable. Time is of the essence now as we start to bond the elements together. Test pieces have been produced to check the green verdigris finish and we are looking forward to seeing how the structure will look on completion.

It will never get off the ground! - 17th September, 2012
As any pilot who’s seen Star Wars producer George Lucas’ new film Red Tails will agree, the real stars are not the highly-paid talent whose names appear on top of the credits, but the beautiful war planes whose action sequences make the film memorable.
Most aviators will be familiar with the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the black American pilots who fought for their country in World War Two when they weren’t even allowed to sit in the same restaurant or train carriage as their white countrymen and had to step off the pavement if a white man wished to pass. Red Tails is a dramatised version of the events that surrounded those men, a handful of whom are still alive, but while the cinema goer may thrill to their exploits his heart will surely sink as those beautiful Mustangs and Warhawks are blown to pieces in the interests of the box office. One group who viewed the destruction with a particularly jaundiced eye was Dave Hobson’s crew at Gateguards (UK) Ltd, who lavished care and attention on creating these replicas, which are so good that until you rapped a knuckle on the wing you’d swear they were the real thing.
Celtic Cross, P51 and BAE Systems - 21st August, 2012
After months of hard work here at Newquay, we are now able to tell you what we have been working on. Due to the nature of the projects, we were unable to put them on our website.
We are currently constructing the Celtic Cross monument which is to be sited at Ellwell Woods, Saltash. Duncan Healey has been managing the project with Alastair Mc Donald, a skilled composites engineer taking a hands on approach.
Our team was in Farnborough this year with a UCAV built for BAE Systems which was set up on the approach to the BAE Arena. The aircraft was built over a short time period and was a credit to all involved.
Early Spring saw a P51 Mustang delivered to the USA. This aircraft was built to commemorate the black aviators during WW2 and now rests in a museum specially built in Tuskegee.
Gateguards (UK) Ltd – News and Updates - 28th July, 2011
We are settling in well in our new facility at Newquay Airport. Gateguards has leased a HAS (Hardened Aircraft Shelter), originally intended to house part of the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent Force, in the form of Blackburn Buccaneers and latterly Panavia Tornadoes. If anyone would like to donate either of the above to use as our own gateguard, we would be only too happy to give her a good home!
We have several new projects which are under way or imminent, including:
• A new-build replica Hawker Hurricane to be constructed and installed on the Thames Promenade in Windsor in time for the Diamond Jubilee next year. The replica will depict a Hurricane flown by Squadron Leader John Grandy who commanded 249 Sqn at North Weald during the Battle of Britain.
• A new-build Supermarine Spitfire Mk. II for the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust, for installation in 2012.
• The refurbishment of the existing Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust Hawker Hurricane replica.
New fabrication systems – We have been liaising with industry specialists to develop a reliable process for manufacturing accurate replicas of various aircraft in scales other than 1:1 (Eg: 1/10th, 1/4, etc.) This is much more difficult than building full size replicas, but we believe we have cracked it, and hope to produce the first examples for public display by the middle of 2012.
Our current project, the Red Tail P51D 'Duchess Arlene' is progressing well. Please watch gallery pages for progress photos and artwork.
We will be undertaking the full restoration and refurbishment of a replica Nieuport 17 World War 1 biplane fighter. This is to be completed using the correct doped linen fabric. This replica will be available for sale once restored, and the purchaser can specify the colour scheme and markings of their choice. Watch our 'Work-in-Progress' page for updates, and contact us if you have any queries.
We have received enquiries and had discussions regarding the fabrication of replicas of the following historic aircraft, but in each case the cost in the current financial climate is too much for the client to bear. If we were to build more than one replica, the unit cost would be significantly reduced, so if anyone else out there is considering acquiring such a replica, please let us know:
• Avro Lancaster B1
• De Havilland DH. 98 Mosquito B Mk IV
• North American B25 Mitchell
• Westland Whirlwind Mk. 1a twin-engined fighter-bomber
• Gloster Gladiator
• Messerschmitt Bf109 G-6
